Tackling Human-Lion Conflict in the Chobe Enclave
Chobe enclave is an area of community land surrounded by protected areas on all sides in Botswana and borders the Zambezi region of Namibia. Unsurprisingly, the area is subject to intense human-lion conflict and has substantial potential to act as a major sink for lions in adjacent protected areas. LRF issued a grant to WildCru to help them tackle this conflict. They will do this in three primary ways: a) through the employment of ‘guardians’ to react to incidences of conflict and to train local people on livestock husbandry, b) through the reinforcement of cattle bomas, c) through a system of performance payments where local communities are rewarded for the presence of wildlife on their land.
