Regional Approach to Tackling Trade in Lion Body Parts

Grantee Wildlife Crime Prevention
Type Tackling Illegal Wildlife Trade
Grant Amount $366,650
Duration 2 years

A Regionally Coordinated Approach to Tackling the Trade in Lion Body Parts

The poaching of lion body parts is emerging as a serious threat to the species in parts of its range. We provided a grant to Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP) to work with regional peer organizations to better understand the trade in lion body parts using covert investigations. These investigations will identify the source of the demand, who the key actors involved are, which body parts are most in demand, and what weak points in the trade chain exist that can be tackled. WCP will design a regionally coordinated plan to tackle the trade in conjunction with regional peer organizations and authorities to tackle the threat.
