The country of Tanzania is among the last remaining strongholds for large carnivores left in the world and maintains a critical role in the conservation of Africa’s lions. Across this incredible country, more than 30% of the available land has been designated for conservation. Large wildlife populations remain intact and roam within and outside of protected areas. Preventing and/or mitigating conflict with large carnivores in buffer zones, corridors, and additional lands outside of Tanzania’s national parks, game reserves, and wildlife management areas is a priority of the Government of Tanzania and the National Human-Wildlife Conflict Strategy (2020-2024). Building on LRF funding since 2018, a current grant (2022-2024) supports APW’s strong lion conservation efforts – contributing to lion population recovery – with continued funding in the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem and a partnership with the Tarangire Lion Project, while the project also expands to Mikumi NP via partnerships with the Tanzania National Parks Authority and other conservation stakeholders.
