The Pandemic-Fueled Conservation Crisis in Africa

A recent story from bioGraphic details the conservation crisis happening throughout Africa due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The loss of tourist income coupled with lockdowns and ailing infrastructure have created a perfect storm of issues that threatened how species and their habitat are protected. This is certainly true in Kafue National Park in Zambia, where LRF grantee Panthera has focused its efforts supporting law enforcement to curb poaching and strengthen protected area management for lions and other wildlife. Dr. Peter Lindsey, Director of the LRF, describes how budget deficits have hindered conservation work, but also highlight areas where improvements to established practices can have lasting positive effects.
