Selous GR is one of Africa’s largest protected areas and contains a critically important population of lions. The status of lions in Selous is not known, but it is possible that the reserve contains one of (if not the) largest populations of the species in the world. FZS supported law enforcement in Selous, working hand in hand with the Tanzania Wildlife Authority. LRF funding supported the deployment of a de-snaring team around part of the boundary that is acutely affected by bushmeat snaring. In addition, our grant will support measures to tackle poisoning of lions and other wildlife species. A second grant was issued in 2020 to strengthen and extend support for these activities, and to help ensure that FZS are able to provide support to wildlife authorities struggling with funding shortages as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. In late 2021, LRF issued a further two grants, totaling $225,000 to help bridge funding gaps for operations, to assist with aerial surveillance and deployment of desnaring teams.
